Matera and Sassi di Matera

Matera

UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993.
The city of the Sassi is considered the third oldest in the world. The first settlement dates back about ten thousand years ago. This is testified by the numerous prehistoric finds found on the place. In the early 1950s, it was called “the shame of Italy” where people lived in houses run down and with poor sanitation. Today it is a completely re-evaluated area, and it is a popular destination for many tourists they appreciate strength and beauty.
